Kasey Keller named to 2011 MLS Best XI

Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller was named to the 2011 MLS Best XI, as announced by commissioner Don Garber on a leaguewide conference call this afternoon.

Keller becomes the second Sounder to make an MLS Best XI. Freddie Ljungberg was the only other in 2009.

“I think it just kind of reiterates what I said at the beginning of the season (regarding) the way I wanted to go out,” Keller said Wednesday. “I wanted to go out kind of on my terms, still being able to play at the level that I’m happy to play with, that you all are … used to having me play and the fans and the coaching staff and my teammates. I just didn’t want to go out where I wasn’t able to perform at the level that I expect of myself and that everyone else expects of me, so I’m proud that I was able to finish my last season at that level.

“(MLS Best XI is) just kind of a bonus thing. I’ve never played to try and get those kinds of achievements. I always figured that if the team was successful and if I played to my ability and somebody thought that I did a good job than great. It’s an honor and thank you, but that’s kind of the way I wanted to go out, was still being able to perform at the highest level.”

In what was a little bit of a surprise, no other Sounders made the team. Here’s who made the cut:

Goalkeeper – Kasey Keller (Seattle Sounders)

Defender – Todd Dunivant (LA Galaxy)

Defender – Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy)

Defender – Jamison Olave (Real Sale Lake)

Midfielder – David Beckham (LA Galaxy)

Midfielder – Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo)

Midfielder – Dwayne De Rosario (D.C. United)

Midfielder – Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

Midfielder – Brek Shea (FC Dallas)

Forward – Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls)

Forward – Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
