David Beckham named MLS Comeback Player of the Year

MLS Logo.jpgDavid Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy have their eyes on the big prize (the MLS Cup), but the star midfielder won a smaller one Monday in MLS Comeback Player of the Year.

The news came as a little bit of a surprise as many believed D.C. United forward Charlie Davies, who recovered from a life-threatening car accident, would win.

Beckham, who played just seven games in 2010 due to a torn Achilles tendon, won the weighted total at 59.76. Davies was a close second at 57.81.

Beckham, who was also named to the MLS Best XI, carried the player vote at 19.9-percent (Davies second at 17.28).

Davies earned the media vote, including mine, at 26.7-percent (Beckham second at 22.84)

Chicago’s Dominic Oduro won the club vote at 18.09-percent. (Houston’s Geoff Cameron was second at 17.21, Beckham was third at 17.02 and Davies was fourth at 13.83).

In what could be his last season in MLS, Beckham played 26 games and had 15 assists (second best in the league) to help lead the Galaxy to a second straight Supporters’ Shield. L.A.’s 67 points were the second most in MLS history.
