Sounders FC to open 2012 season at home on March 10

MLS Logo.jpgMLS announced the dates of teams’ home openers for the 2012 season on Tuesday and Sounders FC’s will be on Saturday, March 10 as a part of First Kick along with five other teams: Colorado, D.C. United, LA Galaxy, San Jose and Vancouver.

Further details on the home opener like the time, opponent and broadcast information won’t be available until the full regular season schedule is announced, probably in January.

The Sounders will be busy around that time, which really demands the MLS home opener to be played when it is. Seattle hosts the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal on March 7 against Mexico’s Santos Laguna. The road leg is on March 14.

This will be the fourth consecutive season that Sounders FC opens its season at home; the last three have been stand-alone openers before the rest of the league got underway. This marks the earliest opener of them all and the first time it fell on a weekend.

Here are the dates of all the openers (Houston’s new downtown stadium won’t be unveiled until May, Montreal will start out at Olympic Stadium until the newly-renovated Stade Saputo opens in June):

WEEK 1

Saturday, March 10: Colorado Rapids, D.C. United, LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Sunday, March 11: Chivas USA, FC Dallas

Monday, March 12: Portland Timbers

WEEK 2

Saturday, March 17: Sporting Kansas City, Montreal Impact, Real Salt Lake

Sunday, March 18: Philadelphia Union

WEEK 3

Saturday, March 24: Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, New England Revolution, Toronto FC

Sunday, March 25: New York Red Bulls

WEEK 10

Saturday, May 12: Houston Dynamo (new stadium opener)
