In a bit of a surprise announcement, Sounders FC midfielder Erik Friberg has been sold to Sweden’s Malmo FF. The 25-year-old is starting a family, according to general manager Adrian Hanauer in a news release, which necessitated a move closer to home for the Goteborg native.
“This move enables the couple to be near their families and have the proper support,” Hanauer said in the release.
Per league and club policy, terms were not disclosed.
Friberg played several seasons in Sweden before joining the Sounders (BK Hacken 2007-10, Vastra Frolunda IF 2005-06). He started 23 of his 26 MLS games played and had a goal and two assists.
The Sounders had exercised the option on Friberg’s contract following the season and protected him in the expansion draft.
“I am very proud to have played for Sounders FC and our tremendous fans,” said Friberg in the release. “It’s been a fantastic year for me, one that I will never forget. I want to thank my teammates, the coaches, the club officials and our supporters for all their help and encouragement. Perhaps in the future, there will be an opportunity for me to come back and play again for the Sounders.”
