Shorewood High School retires George John’s No. 11 jersey

george john SW.jpgFC Dallas star defender George John, a local product, had his No. 11 jersey number retired Thursday night at Shorewood High School. The ceremony came at halftime of the Thunderbirds’ boys basketball game against Oak Harbor.

John, 24, is a Shoreline native and former standout at the University of Washington. According to Vicki Gorman, Shorewood’s athletic director, several community members, students and former soccer alumni were on hand, where John signed autographs and took pictures.

The standout centerback, who has earned interest from English Premier League teams and also has national team options with the United States and Greece, came back to campus Friday morning to speak with the school’s soccer teams.

“We had a great time,” Gorman wrote in an email, which provided the picture.

A first-round draft pick by Dallas in 2009, John has helped lead his team to the MLS playoffs the last two seasons and an appearance in the MLS Cup final in 2010. A two-time first-team All-Pac-10 selection at UW, he led the Huskies to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2006 and 2007.

He graduated from Shorewood in 2005.
