Portland Timbers sign UW senior Brent Richards as a homegrown player

richards mug.jpgWashington senior forward Brent Richards, a Camas native, has signed as a homegrown player with the Portland Timbers, the team announced Wednesday.

The 21-year-old has played the past three years with the Timbers U-23 PDL team, but apparently qualifies as a homegrown signing due to his club history with Eastside United FC — a “Timbers-affiliated club in Gresham, Ore.” according to a news release.

Portland owner Merritt Paulson (@MerrittPaulson) and FOX Soccer’s Ives Galarcep (@SoccerByIves) each tried to clarify a confusing situation on Twitter earlier today, so I encourage skeptical fans to check out their timelines. They have a much better understanding of the eligibility parameters than I do in this instance.

With the Huskies, Richards accumulated 31 goals and 15 assists in 72 games and led the team in scoring, goals and game-winning goals in each of his four seasons. He was a four-time, all-conference honoree and was named to the first team in 2010 and 2011.

In high school, he led the Camas Papermakers to state championships in 2006 and 2008 — I covered the latter — and was named Washington’s Gatorade Player of the Year following his senior season.
