Michelle French hired as coach of Sounders Women and other links

Sounders_Women_logo_med.jpgThe Sounders Women have announced the hiring of a new coach, signing Kent native Michelle French to a two-year deal.

The local product was a two-time Parade All-American at Kennedy High School in Burien. Then, at the University of Portland, she was an All-American in 1998 under coach Clive Charles and won a silver medal with the 2000 U.S. Olympic team.

“I’m looking forward to working with everyone involved in the Seattle Sounders Women’s organization to continue the tradition of building a team of talented and driven athletes who not only love the game, but also take to heart the role they will play in our soccer community here in the Northwest,” said French, a former Sounder, in a news release.

Here’s a story our columnist Steve Kelley wrote on French a couple years ago, detailing her remarkable recovery from non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

And a bunch of other links:

KING-5 is reporting that Sounders FC analyst Pete Fewing will be hired as the next men’s soccer coach at Seattle U., where he previously led the Redhawks to a pair of national championships. A formal announcement is expected Tuesday.

— The U.S. men’s national team has scheduled a Feb. 29 (leap year!) exhibition against Italy in Genoa. Also, here’s a video of all the USMNT goals from 2011. Lastly, if you want to check out Jeff Parke and Brad Evans in a national team kit, and you’ll be in Arizona on Jan. 20, check out the team’s open practice.

Soccer by Ives caught up with Sigi Schmid to talk a little about the MLS combine. Here’s an interview with commissioner Don Garber about the future of the combine and draft.

Here’s a list of some players that were at the Sounders’ combine in Trinidad. According to a tweet from a Washington Post reporter, Seattle is among a few teams pursuing a U.S. U-17 star (includes a link to the story).

— Around the league, one reporter explores the possibility of the 2012 MLS All-Star Game going to Philadelphia. Here’s a great rundown of what can be a very complicated and confusing homegrown player rule. Shoreline native George John of FC Dallas appears to be on his way to West Ham on loan. And be sure to check out this update on potential changes to the U.S. Open Cup bidding process.

— A team from my hometown is granting free admission for life to fans who show extreme devotion in the form of a tattoo.

— And, to close, I’ve posted one of my favorite goals of the weekend after the jump…
