Sounders exploring PDL involvement

pdl logo.jpgSounders FC is looking into potential partnership possibilities within the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League, the fourth tier of the American soccer pyramid.

“In an ideal situation we would have an affiliated PDL team for our Sounders FC Academy players,” said general manager Adrian Hanauer in a statement. “Toward that end, we have been discussing how we might partner with existing amateur PDL teams such as the Tacoma Tide. There are still details to sort out but I believe we’re on the right track.”

The News Tribune first reported late Monday that discussions are ongoing with the Tide and that the PDL team could be called the Sounders U-23s.

Hanauer told The News Tribune: “We have to dot the I’s and cross the T’s and make sure the legal department goes through everything. … But yeah we’ve talked about some kind of Sounders moniker connected to the team.”

Other MLS teams with a PDL influence include Portland, Vancouver and Chicago. The Timbers signed UW forward Brent Richards as a homegrown player earlier this month and according to owner Merritt Paulson, his PDL history with the Timbers U-23s helped make him eligible. But a potential Sounders partnership in the PDL wouldn’t likely make players homegrown eligible that otherwise wouldn’t be.

Could be an interesting venture for the Sounders.
