Sounders sign 19-year-old Trinidadian Cordell Cato

Reports first surfaced about a month ago that the Sounders would sign 19-year-old Trinidadian forward Cordell Cato. The move became official Wednesday and will be finalized upon the receipt of his P-1 visa and international clearance.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Cato will likely take up a developmental slot on the roster. The contract is reportedly a one-year deal with two option years.

Cato, listed at 5-foot-9, 150 pounds, trained with the Sounders last summer and I’m told he’s in the Sanna Nyassi mold. He’s listed as a forward in the news release, but expect him to play as an outside midfielder, as well.

“He’s a young player with a good future,” said coach Sigi Schmid in a news release, praising Cato’s speed and versatility.

Cato was on the Trinidad and Tobago squad for the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championships in Guatemala last year.
