Mauro Rosales gets green card, another Sounder close?

Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid held a teleconference with Seattle-area reporters Wednesday afternoon. Personally, I’ve noticed a large amount of international players on the camp roster and asked the coach if some are close to getting their green card or if the team might need to trade for an extra international slot for the 2012 season.

MLS teams are allowed to have eight international players on the roster. International players don’t take one of those slots once they receive a green card.

Here was Schmid’s response, starting off with some news:

“(Mauro) Rosales picked up his green card, so there’s one open slot right now, and we think another player is fairly close. And obviously some of the internationals are competing against each other, so when you look at the international slots, the bottom side is probably competing against each other.

“If we feel we need to trade for an international slot, then we’ll obviously consider that, but that’s something that we don’t feel we need to do right now at the moment.”

As I understand it, here are the players that count as internationals (correct me if I’m mistaken):

Roster: Michael Gspurning, Adam Johansson, Michael Tetteh, Alvaro Fernandez, Christian Sivebaek, Amadou Sanyang, Cordell Cato

Non-roster: Andy Rose, Jason Banton, Andrew Vanzie, Ever Alvarado, Harlinton Gutierres

Edit: Sodade was previously listed among the non-roster internationals, but he was born in the U.S. and has American citizenship.
