Emirates looking to sponsor Sounders

emirates.jpgCorrected version

A fascinating story by our own Dominic Gates just posted online.

He reports that Middle Eastern airlines Emirates is hoping to promote its brand in Seattle as part of a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign, and the company might be looking to sponsor the Sounders.

Emirates, which has a famous sponsorship with Arsenal (and several others including with Real Madrid and AC Milan), began a service of daily flights between Seattle and Dubai on Thursday.

From the story: [Emirates President Tim] Clark said that after the initial wave of publicity in this region, Emirates is actively “looking for more permanent (marketing) vehicles, such as soccer.”

As far as I can tell, Microsoft’s sponsorship of the Sounders was a five-year deal, which would run through the 2013 season. Though there’s nothing to suggest that there are any issues with what has been a very successful partnership.

CenturyLink’s naming rights of the stadium, which were assumed after purchasing Qwest last summer, run through the 2014 season. UPDATE: I missed the story a couple days after the linked story, which said CenturyLink extended the sponsorship arrangement an additional five years to 2019.

How intriguing that such a massive company would look to the local soccer scene to help promote what is a global brand.
