Notes, pictures from Thursday’s scrimmage

03012012 scrimmage.JPGThe Sounders held a late afternoon intersquad scrimmage Thursday, that’s why some news and notes have come later than usual.

The starters from Wednesday’s game did not participate and had a regeneration session off to the side. Eddie Johnson also wasn’t involved as he gets back from the hamstring injury. I think there’s definitely a good chance he could factor in the CCL series off the bench.

From what we could gather of the informal event, the scrimmage finished 2-0 with both goals coming from Michael Tetteh. Along with the Sounders reserves, there were several guest players on hand, including former Sounder Taylor Graham and academy products Darwin Jones and Jamael Cox.

SoundersFC.com’s Matt Gaschk had more details in his report, including a note that Graham is a new radio analyst for the team, which I hadn’t heard.

The game was supposed to be 90 minutes, but darkness cut the second half 15 minutes short. Coach Sigi Schmid said it was good to get the guys 75 minutes of fitness work.

“I think some guys might have gotten a little bit of a wake-up call, too,” said Schmid, hinting that some roster spots aren’t guaranteed.

Midfielder Steve Zakuani saw a few minutes at the end as he continues to work his way back. Schmid said Zakuani’s outing went OK.

“The light let us down a little bit; we didn’t think about that and we would’ve wanted him to play a little more,” the coach said. “We have generally played him only against ourselves, so playing him against a little bit of outside competition makes it a little bit different. So from that standpoint, it was good for him to get out there. He made one sprint back so it was good for him to test his speed a little bit that was. It’s just a little bit at a time without doing too much.”

Lastly, with Thursday serving as the league’s roster compliance day, Schmid was also asked about potential roster moves.

“I think we’re getting close,” he answered. “There still might be some subtractions, yeah, for sure. There are things that are still in the works right now. Being roster compliant doesn’t mean that you have to have everybody signed. You can still sign guys after March 1. We have some openings still to sign some people, and still have to make some final resolutions on some other people.”

A couple more pictures after the jump…
