Sounder for life (Saturday links)

After a long week, the Sounders are taking Saturday off before resuming preparations for Santos Laguna on Sunday. Until then, you should read this story on SoundersFC.com about super fan Steve Sarina, an ECS member who died this week after a long battle with melanoma.

From the story:

“He always said the phrase, ‘I’m Sounders ’til I die’ … He took it literally,” said his friend and care-taker Stephanie Beck. “We have been overwhelmed with the support from the Sounders. It’s pretty amazing.”

A memorial fund is being arranged to honor Sarina and the ECS will hold a memorial service for Sarina on March 10 at Temple Billiards from 4 to 8 p.m.

— Sounders Women’s forward Sydney Leroux scored the deciding goal for the U.S. women’s national team in a 2-1 win against Norway in the Algarve Cup. Leroux has seven goals in her first seven games, tying a USWNT record.

— Some other notes from Twitter: Arlo White was featured in Leicester Mercury magazine and ESPN has some data on the growing popularity of soccer.

Fredy Montero‘s wonder-chip was featured on a popular U.K. soccer blog. World class indeed.

— Did you know coach Sigi Schmid has the most March wins in MLS history?

— New England picked up Lee Nguyen in Friday’s waiver draft.

— The NASL has received sanctioning from U.S. Soccer as a Division 2 league.

— FIFA president Sepp Blatter is hopeful there will be goal-line technology for the 2014 World Cup. FIFA otherwise isn’t happy with Brazil’s progress toward hosting the tournament.

— Lastly, could there be a Kasey Keller ferry? Maybe if enough people suggest it…
