Sounders Women’s forward Alex Morgan scored three goals to lead the U.S. women’s national team to a 4-0 win over Sweden in the third-place game of the 2012 Algarve Cup in Portugal.
Seattle goalkeeper Hope Solo did not play and new club teammate Sydney Leroux subbed on late.
The Sounders Women also announced another signing Wednesday in local product Kate Deines. The midfielder played at the University of Washington and Issaquah High School, where she won three state championships.
Deines, who played from the Sounders Women from 2007-09, was drafted last winter by the Atlanta Beat of WPS, but was free to sign elsewhere due to the league’s suspension for this season. Deines has U-23 experience with the USWNT, was a four-time All-Pac-10 player for the Huskies and twice named Gatorade State Player of the Year in high school.
“Kate has been successful on every level from club soccer with Eastside FC, high school with Issaquah HS, collegiately at UW, and with the youth national team programs,” coach Michelle French said in a news release. “My hope is that the Sounders Women team will give her the platform to continue to grow and excel on a professional level. We are so fortunate to have an amazing local player become part of our organization.”
Added Deines: “I am so excited to be reunited with a lot of the women that I had the opportunity to play with a couple years ago,” Kate said.
