Four Sounders FC starters arrive to stadium very late due to traffic on I-90

The matchup against Santos Laguna was going to be difficult enough.

Then, leading into Wednesday night’s kickoff, the Sounders faced another problem: Fredy Montero, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Osvaldo Alonso and Michael Gspurning were all stuck in traffic on I-90 stemming from an accident further up the highway.

Coach Sigi Schmid‘s mind raced.

“Are we going to have to change the lineup? Are they going to get here on time?” he thought.

The players arrived about a half hour before the 7 p.m. kickoff and Schmid decided to stick with the original lineup. It paid of in a 2-1 win in the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal in front of 23,433 at CenturyLink Field.

“As we always say, whatever the obstacles are, we’re just going to deal with them,” said Schmid, who thought some of the affected players were rattled by the day’s events. “We deal with the adversity and we move on.”

Added Gspurning: “It was more stressful before the game than in the game.”

General manager Adrian Hanauer was also in the gridlock.

Interesting pregame drama, don’t you think?
