Game-day arrives (Wednesday links)

ccl logo.jpgThe day is here.

Preseason is over.

This one counts.

Sounders FC hosts Mexico’s Santos Laguna in the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal at 7 p.m. tonight at CenturyLink Field. The game will be televised on FOX Soccer, a premium cable channel (401 and 618 on Comcast). Ross Fletcher will have the radio call, sans Kasey Keller, on 97.3 KIRO-FM and ESPN Deportes will have the Spanish radio call.

The game will also be streamed online for free on the CCL website, though registration is required.

Here’s my preview story for Wednesday’s paper and here’s are some more links:

* * *

— Monterrey kicked off CCL quarterfinal action last night with a 3-1 win over Mexican counterpart Morelia.

— Here’s a FIFA.com feature on Santos Laguna forward and former A-League Sounder Herculez Gomez.

— The Sounders Women announced some coaching signings Tuesday: Randy Hanson as assistant coach and Kelly Bendixen as goalkeeper coach. The Colorado Force of the W-League has partnered with the Rapids and will be known as the Colorado Rapids Women beginning this season.

— MLSsoccer.com has the Sounders No. 2 in its preseason power rankings. Agree?

The Big Lead caught up with Sounders FC senior vice president of business operations, Gary Wright.

— Vancouver is down to 13,000 in season-ticket sales. They were close to 15,500 last year.

— Sports Illustrated has it’s Eastern Conference preview and 10 breakout players. Former SI.com writer Steve Davis has a new gig; he’s running the ProSoccerTalk blog for NBC Sports.

— If you can believe it, here’s another chat with Andrew Weber about “The Amazing Race.”

Here’s one writer who thinks former NASL Sounder Harry Redknapp might not be the best choice to take over the English national team.

— The UEFA Champions League is down to six. Arsenal amazingly pulled back three goals of a four-goal deficit before halftime against AC Milan, but couldn’t find an equalizer. Benfica also advanced past Zenit St. Petersburg.

— Lastly, a couple videos: Soccer AM’s latest “Showboat” and a guy gets red carded for allegedly diving while being taken off the field on a stretcher.
