David Estrada‘s three-goal performance Saturday updated some record books:
— He became the third Sounder in club history to record a hat trick, joining former teammates Blaise Nkufo (Sept. 18, 2010) and Lamar Neagle (Aug. 27, 2011).
— He became the first MLS player with a hat trick this season.
— He became the third MLS player with a hat trick in his team’s regular-season opener.
Did I mention he hadn’t scored an MLS goal in his previous two seasons? Needless to say, Saturday was Estrada’s night, and coach Sigi Schmid and his teammates had lots of nice things to say after the game.
While it’s just starting to happen in MLS, Estrada certainly has some familiarity with scoring — and at a high rate. He scored 66 goals in his senior season in high school (the most in the country that year), including 11 in one game. As a walk-on at UCLA, he scored a freshman record 12 goals.
