The Sounders announced their big blowout friendly today — they’ll host Chelsea FC of the English Premier League on July 18 — but there was arguably bigger news in the press release.
Seattle also confirmed that all of CenturyLink Field will be open for MLS home games against Cascadia rivals Vancouver (Aug. 18) and Portland (Oct. 7), and the reigning MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy (Aug. 5). It’s all part of a glamorous four-game pack that just went on sale.
Normally, international opponents are needed to fill 67,000-seat stadiums with fans and excitement. As seen last year in the regular-season finale against San Jose, that isn’t the case here.
I’m very excited to see how the Pacific Northwest rivalry games compare to the friendly.
And make no mistake, Chelsea will be sure to make a splash this summer after what has been a disappointing league season (though the Blues are in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals). It could be a bit of a new-look team with a new manager. Cristiano Ronaldo is in the rumor mill.
So what do you think?
