Sounders FC will host Chelsea FC of the English Premier League in a July 18 friendly

chelsea.jpgSounders FC announced Monday that it will host Chelsea FC of the English Premier League in a July 18 friendly at CenturyLink Field.

Tickets are included in season-ticket packages. Game tickets go on sale June 4, but you can secure a seat by buying a four-game pack that went on sale today that includes tickets to home games against the Los Angeles Galaxy (Aug. 5) and Cascadia rivals Vancouver (Aug. 18) and Portland (Oct. 7).

All of CenturyLink Field will be open for the friendly and the three others in the four-game pack.

“I’m looking forward to an unprecedented match day experience not only for Chelsea FC but also for LA, Vancouver and Portland,” said majority owner Joe Roth in a news release.

It hasn’t been finalized yet whether the friendly will be played on the new FieldTurf or a temporary grass surface, but FieldTurf would be the preference, according to Gary Wright, the Sounders’ vice president of business operations.

There was speculation about four weeks ago that Seattle would host the Blues this summer. Last month, the Sounders rescheduled their July 18 home game against Real Salt Lake to Oct. 17 to accommodate the friendly, which hadn’t been finalized at that point.

This will be Chelsea’s fifth trip to Seattle, with previous visits in 2009, 2004, 1977 and 1967.

“We’re delighted to be returning to Seattle to kick off our summer tour in the U.S. The right pre-season preparation is vital to us and there’s no better place to start. Seattle’s facilities are second to none and the Sounders are quality opponents who enjoy great support,” said Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay in the release. “We were there in 2004 and 2009 and both turned out to be winning seasons for us, so we’re really looking forward to taking the team back.”

I’ll update this post throughout the afternoon.
