MLS retroactively punishes Fernandez for dive, Houston’s Moffat for tackle

MLS Logo.jpgMLS Disciplinary Committee announced Friday that it has fined Sounders FC midfielder Alvaro Fernandez an undisclosed amount for “embellishment of contact” in the 82nd minute of Friday night’s 2-0 win against the Houston Dynamo.

Fernandez clearly made the most of a bump from Dynamo midfielder Brad Davis. He got the foul call, but nothing more.

From the same game, Houston’s midfielder Adam Moffat has been suspended for a game and fined an undisclosed amount for “a reckless challenge which endangered the safety of his opponent” in the 35th minute.

If I remember correctly, that’s when he got a yellow card for a studs-up challenge on Osvaldo Alonso (posted below). I believe Moffat caught Ozzie on the shinguard with his cleats, and the committee must have viewed that as a red-card offense.

Fines will go to the charitable partners of MLS W.O.R.K.S. and the MLS Players Union.

MLS has made a point of doling out retroactive punishment, particularly for dangerous tackles and diving. What do you think of the punishment?
