Rosales, Johnson, Johansson out vs. San Jose, Evans a game-time decision

The Sounders will again be without some key players in Saturday’s 7 p.m. home game against the San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field. Here are the updates from coach Sigi Schmid:

* * *

— Midfielder Mauro Rosales will be out as he continues to recover from a sprained knee. Next week’s game at D.C. United is also in question for him at this point, but it sounds like he should be good to go for a April 14 home game against Colorado.

— Forward Eddie Johnson appears to be doing well coming off the hip injury, but Schmid has said they want him to build a bigger fitness base before playing him again to avoid a relapse. Johnson will likely play in Sunday’s reserve game against Gonzaga.

— While defender Adam Johansson has made good progress from the hamstring injury, Schmid said he’s probably not playing again this week, but should be available in D.C.

— Midfielder Brad Evans, also recovering from a hamstring tweak, is doing best of all and will be a game-time decision.

When asked if it can be a good thing to test depth this early, Schmid said: “It’s a good thing because you realize what you have. It’s better to find out what you have early on then trying to find out later in the season. … On the same token, we’ve always been happy with our depth and the quality that we have. We feel there’s a number of players who can step in and play, and this is their opportunity to show what they can do.”
