POLL: Do you think it was a penalty kick?

When a controversial penalty-kick results in the only score in the game, it’s going to be a talking point.

Such was the case in Seattle on Saturday, when referee Mark Kadlecik granted San Jose a PK in the first half when Steven Lenhart made the most of some contact with Sounders FC’s Marc Burch in the penalty box.

So was it deserved? I didn’t think so. Opinions were mixed after the game.

None of the San Jose quotes provided to the media addressed the topic, but we can assume the visitors thought it was warranted.

“From my angle, I didn’t necessarily think it was a PK,” said Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid. “I thought it was sort of what they say in basketball when you initiate the contact, (that) kind of thing.”

Schmid certainly wasn’t furious at the decision and said he thought Burch was reacting to what might’ve been a foul by Lenhart moments earlier.

Burch mentioned the same thing, but also added, interestingly, “it was my fault, 100 percent.”

“I went up for a header and he gave me a little elbow in the back,” he explained, “so he started running around the far post and I just tried to jump into his path, and he sold it pretty well. I don’t think I swung, I don’t think I kicked him, and I don’t think that I tried to take him down on purpose, but I jumped in his path and I shouldn’t have.”

When asked if the call was warranted, Burch went a different direction and didn’t exactly say, “No.”

“I think that the foul before that was warranted,” he said. “I think that me going up in the air and getting pushed in the back on a goal-scoring opportunity is a little worse than him running by me and me jumping in his path. I don’t know and I will have to watch the replay — maybe it looked a lot worse. He sells fouls pretty well and I am sure he sold that one as well as he could. Sometimes the ref buys into it and sometimes he doesn’t.”

Later in the interview, Burch went so far to say Lenhart dived, so it’s hard to tell precisely how the Sounders defender felt about the play.

What do you think?
