Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

April 2, 2012 at 11:03 AM

Off day (Monday links)

After a busy weekend, the Sounders are taking Monday off, so there won’t be a lot of news today. With Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (pelvis) upping the injury count to 11, a day off should serve the team well.

It’s very possible that we see the returns this weekend — at least in some fashion — of Hurtado, Brad Evans (hamstring), Adam Johnasson (hamstring) and Eddie Johnson (hip) in Saturday’s road game at D.C. United.

Here are some links:

* * *

— Soccer legend Giorgio Chinaglia died Sunday after complications from a heart attack. Our own Alan Hinton recalled the man best known in the U.S. for playing for the NASL’s New York Cosmos and Michael Lewis writes of Chinaglia: “He was one of a kind.”

— Sounders FC academy defender Jalen Markey played for the U.S. U-18 men’s national team and scored off a corner kick in a 3-2 loss to the Ventura County Fusion of the PDL.

— Here’s one writer that wonders if it’s time for Fredy Montero to move on to a bigger league.

Thierry Henry was named MLS Player of the Week, again, for his three-goal, one-assist performance against expansion Montreal.

— Looks like someone locally got the Southsiders, Vancouver’s main supporters group, with an April Fools’ prank.

— It was an interesting weekend in MLS, notably Galaxy star David Beckham was subbed off at halftime of a 3-1 loss to New England.

— Lastly, I’m not sure what’s crazier in this clip, the knuckling flight of this tremendous shot or the look-at-my-quad goal celebration.
