Fernandez on being fined for embellishment: “I just have to adapt to the league.”

fernandez mug 2012.jpgThe news that Alvaro Fernandez was fined for embellishing contact in a March 23 game against Houston is a little old — and another round of retroactive punishment has come and gone — but Wednesday marked the first time I was able to ask the Sounders FC midfielder about it.

Here’s his response to the verdict from the MLS Disciplinary Committee:

“It’s the first time that’s happened to me, so I just have to roll with it,” Fernandez said through an interpreter. “I have to accept what the league says.”

Coach Sigi Schmid addressed the issue before last week’s game against San Jose and brought up the point that embellishing contact is interpreted differently in other countries and cultures.

Fernandez spoke to that issue, as well.

“There are different perspectives on soccer in the world,” he said. “So where I’m from, down in South America, we work on getting an advantage out of every situation that we can — no matter what that is. It’s not looked upon badly. Here it is looked upon badly. It’s not a bad thing, it is what it is, and I just have to adapt to the league.”
