A day for the favorites (Thursday links)

Wednesday was a big midweek soccer day around the world, with games in MLS, the CONCACAF Champions League and UEFA Champions League.

Safe to say it was also a day for the favorites.

Real Salt Lake beat Montreal 1-0 at home in league action behind an early penalty-kick. Herculez Gomez scored twice as Mexico’s Santos Laguna overcame a slow start to advance past Toronto FC in the CCL semifinals (joining defending champion Monterrey in the final). Over in Europe, Chelsea FC and Real Madrid each advanced, as expected, to the UCL semifinals, joining Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

As Mel Brooks would say: “It’s good to be the king.”

Anyways, let’s get to some links…

* * *

— Here’s my story and chat transcript of Hope Solo‘s arrival to Seattle, so be sure to check that out. Sounds like she’ll be helping out Seiko Watches, too.

— SoundersFC.com has a good video recap of a recent Xbox tournament that some of the players participated in. Proceeds benefited a good cause.

— U.S. men’s national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann held a conference call yesterday. Here’s the transcript and here are some highlights, in case you don’t want to read through the whole thing. Elsewhere, it sounds like the injured Stuart Holden won’t play again this season.

— Seattle goalkeeper Michael Gspurning was deemed to have had the fourth-best performance in the league last weekend, according to the Castrol Index. Federal Way native Kelyn Rowe, a New England midfielder, came in at No. 2.

— Here’s an interview with goalkeeper Paul Christensen of the Sounders FC academy. Sounds like he’s starting for the U.S. U-17s against Portugal today.
