Sodade undergoes surgery to repair torn ACL

Sounders FC rookie Babayele Sodade underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The forward suffered the injury last month while serving with Canada’s Olympic qualifying team.

“The surgery and everything went all right,” said coach Sigi Schmid. “Outside of the ACL — as I understand it — there was very little damage, if any. So that’s good.”

Typical recovery from ACL surgery is 6 to 9 months, so Schmid was asked if that closes the book on Sodade’s 2012 season.

“It all depends,” the coach said. “Everybody has their own recovery rate. Generally, when you get to the end of the season, unless you think a guy has recovered really well and is going to make a critical difference, you’re better off taking the extra time.”

For example, Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez is recovering from the same injury, but there will be a lot more pressure in Los Angeles to get the 2011 MLS Defender of the Year back on the field as soon as possible.
