Sounders FC reserves fall to 0-2-1 after last-gasp defeat to Los Angeles Galaxy

Sounders FC lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy, 1-0, in an MLS Reserve League game Monday at The Home Depot Center.

L.A.’s goal came in the 90th minute from rookie midfielder Rafael Garcia on an assist from academy product Raul Mendiola. The Galaxy reserves are 1-1; Seattle fell to 0-2-1 after going 8-1-1 last season.

The Sounders were forced to play a man down after the 69th minute, when midfielder Christian Sivebaek was given a straight red card for a hard tackle on L.A.’s Bryan Gaul. Earlier, the visitors couldn’t convert on chances from Andy Rose (58′) and Roger Levesque (59′).

On the bench for Seattle was MLS pool goalkeeper Brian Rowe (who played against the Sounders reserves for Portland last week), ex-trialist Jonathan Prieto (who been in training camp the past two years), Armando Ochoa (Sammy’s younger brother, who played in Austria for the same team as a former Sounder) and Sean Morris (a 2011 supplemental draft pick and local product who has signed with the U-23s).

Sounders FC hosts UW in a training game Saturday and returns to MLS Reserve League action next week against Chivas USA on Monday, April 23. Kickoff is 11 a.m. at The Home Depot Center.

EZRA HENDRICKSON, Sounders FC assistant coach

(On the game…) “The second half, we had a better effort than we did in the first half. In the first half, we didn’t create much at all. Even with a man down we were able to get some good chances, but it was not enough. It’s hard to play that long with a man down.”

(On the effort…) “I can’t fault the boys for effort. They played really hard, especially when we went a man down. But it was just too much pressure to withstand for so long.”

(On Roger Levesque’s chance in the 58th minute…) “If we score that, we go up 1-0 and then the pressure is on them. But it wasn’t meant to be. We have to see games out and it’s kind of disheartening that we couldn’t. But the boys will rebound next week and go back to the drawing board and fight even harder.”
