Furlough day (Wednesday links)

Unfortunately, I’ll be serving another furlough day today, which means this prescheduled post will be all I can offer in terms of coverage on the blog. The Sounders aren’t expected to resume formal training until Thursday, so there shouldn’t be much team news.

I recommend checking out some of the big games on today’s schedule, including…

Chelsea vs. Barcelona, 11:45 a.m. (UEFA Champions League semifinal, first leg)

D.C. United vs. Montreal Impact, 4:30 p.m. (MLS regular season)

Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Sporting Kansas City, 7 p.m. (MLS regular season)

CF Monterrey vs. Club Santos Laguna, 7 p.m. (CONCACAF Champions League final, first leg)

And here are some links:

* * *

— A couple of the Sounders Women (coach Michelle French and forward Lyndsey Patterson) were on KING-5’s New Day Northwest. You can check out the video here.

— Sounders FC defender Zach Scott was rated the league’s best player last weekend by the Castrol Index and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso was named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week (Scott and defender Jeff Parke earned honorable mention).

— Here’s a CCL preview from The Sporting News with insights from Santos forward, and former A-League Sounder, Herculez Gomez.

— Today we could learn of the retroactive punishment surely in line for New York midfielder Rafa Marquez for his collarbone-breaking tackle on San Jose’s Shea Salinas. Red Bulls GM Erik Soler said the team has talked to Marquez and is ready for whatever discipline comes. Salinas isn’t bitter over the incident.

— Chivas USA has signed 19-year-old Colombian forward Jose Erick Correa. Apparently he was a pretty prolific scorer in the Colombian First Division.

— Here are some details from U.S. Soccer on the National Soccer Hall of Fame induction on May 30.

— Bayern Munich got a late goal from Mario Gomez to beat Real Madrid, 2-1, at home in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League semifinal.

— And, lastly, a golazo
