Sueno MLS 2012 tryouts this weekend

sueno mls.jpgPreregistration for this weekend’s Sueno MLS 2012 tryouts at Starfire are sold out, but walk-up opportunities are still available in the nationally televised search “to find the best undiscovered young soccer player in the country.”

This is the first time in the event’s six-year history that Seattle is a host city. Eligible participants must be males between 14 and 18 years old (born between May 14, 1994 and April 13, 1998) with appropriate identification, and have retained their amateur status.

Players that haven’t already registered are encouraged to show up at 8 a.m. Saturday and sign up for the walk-up list. Participation and registration are free.

Sounders FC director of youth development Darren Sawatzky will lead the scouting efforts, and friends, family and the general public are encouraged to come watch. Fredy Montero, Josh Ford and TV personalities from Univision’s Republica Deportiva — which will have a reality show of the event — will make appearances.

Tryouts will go all day Saturday and about 400 young players will participate. Thirty or so will advance to Sunday, and then there will be five locals winners (six when you include one goalkeeper) who get week-long tryouts with the Sounders youth development program. Those five also move on to national finals in the Los Angeles area from May 9-13. Winners from local tryouts hosted by FC Dallas (last weekend) and Chivas USA (next weekend) will be there, as well.

The finals are hosted by former MLS star Guillermo Barros Schelotto and “include training sessions, scrimmages, guest celebrity scouts, and an opportunity to meet some of (MLS’s) biggest stars.”

The Sueno MLS winner will be announced on nationally on Republica Deportiva and gets a chance to make it on an MLS team’s youth development academy. Chivas USA midfielder Jorge Villafana was a former contestant and has become the poster boy of the possibilities the event provides.

For the second year, there will also be a competition for goalkeepers. One from each local market will compete in the finals for a chance to be named El Portero Allstate and be mentored by Mexican goalkeeper legend Adolfo Rios.
