Goal-line technology to MLS? (Friday links)

MLS commissioner Don Garber has said the league could implement goal-line technology as soon as July if one of the proposed systems is approved by The International Football Association Board, the sport’s rules-making body.

This AP story has a good roundup of what Garber said Thursday while speaking to the Associated Press Sports Editors. Here are the two proposed systems:

Hawk-Eye is a camera-based ball-tracking system used in tennis and cricket. GoalRef employs a magnetic field with a special ball. Both could be approved.

What do you think?

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— The Sounders FC U-23s, the local PDL affiliate of the Sounders, has signed three more players: Puyallup’s Mark Lee (a defender and former Kitsap Puma), Kenmore’s Anthony Arena (a defender from Wake Forest University) and midfielder Aodhan Quinn of the University of Akron.

— The Seattle University and UW soccer programs are having a game and clinic on Saturday.

— MLS legend Frankie Hejduk has retired and will join the front office of the Columbus Crew as a brand ambassador. He won in MLS Cup in 2008 with the Crew and played in two World Cups.

— Around the league, a look at how the Red Bulls manage being in a crowded sports market, Chicago’s Chris Rolfe will miss this week with an ankle injury (might he miss next week vs. Seattle?) and MLS executive Nelson Rodriguez went on ExtraTime Radio to talk about discipline, specifically the Rafa Marquez punishment.

— Former A-League Sounder Herculez Gomez is a finalist for the CONCACAF Golden Ball. Fans get a vote.

— One study found that soccer is like… is like… is like (how do I put this?) something else that raises hormone levels for its fans.

Lebron James, Liverpool and sneakers? Interesting.

Here’s a great profile on Sounders Women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo, which mentions an autobiography is coming this summer.

— Lastly, Christian Sivebaek does commercials…
