Sigi Schmid on facing the Los Angeles Galaxy: “It’s been a one-sided relationship. … We need to turn that around.”

You don’t need to remind the Sounders that they haven’t beaten the Los Angeles Galaxy in an MLS game since 2009.

Seattle is 0-5-1 the past two years in the head-to-head rivalry heading into Wednesday’s 7 p.m. game at CenturyLink Field. And “rivalry” has definitely become an apt word for the relationship, at least on this side of it.

“I think the bottom line here is these are three points that we really want,” said midfielder Brad Evans. “We’ve given up some points to them in the past and I can guarantee we’ll be fired up Wednesday night.”

Mauro Rosales said it’s a game for the Sounders “to show what we can do.”

Coach Sigi Schmid was asked today if he feared his team might get too fired up to change the recent fortunes in rivalry. On the contrary, he answered.

“I’m happy with us being fired up,” Schmid said. “We’ll take all the fire we can get. I don’t think you can get too fired up for that. We’re a team that’s been very consistent over the past three years and we’ve started off this season all right, as well. We just want to take it to that next level, and winning games of this magnitude is something that will help us get to that level.”

Schmid mentioned after Saturday’s game that the team will look to measure itself against L.A., the defending MLS Cup champion, and knows the media will too. The Galaxy has won the last three games at CenturyLink Field by a combined 6-0 score.

And over the past three years, only L.A. has had a better record (52-21-28) in MLS than the Sounders (48-25-27).

“It’s been a one-sided relationship sort of last year to two years,” Schmid said. “We need to turn that around. I’m confident in our team. We’re looking forward to this game Wednesday. It’s going to be a great game.”
