My MLS power rankings — Week 8

Sporting Kansas City Logo.jpg1. (1) Sporting Kansas City 7-1-0

The way things are going, they might have playoff berth secure by June.

2. (2) San Jose Earthquakes 6-1-1

First team since ’03 to score stoppage-time winners in back-to-back games.

3. (3) Seattle Sounders FC 4-1-1

Schmid: A win against LA could take the team closer to the “next level.”

4. (5) Real Salt Lake 6-3-1

More than just a great name: Jonny Steele scored another game-winner.

5. (6) D.C. United 4-2-3

“Chutzpah” — what Olsen said his team had after hard-fought 3-2 win vs. Houston.

6. (7) Vancouver Whitecaps FC 4-2-2

Mattocks returned this week after a cooking accident led to serious burns on arms and shoulders.

7. (4) Houston Dynamo 2-2-2

Just one game left on a long road trip to start the year before unveiling new stadium May 12.

8. (9) New York Red Bulls 4-3-1

Coach Hans Backe called a hamstring injury to star forward Thierry Henry “a disaster for us.”

9. (8) Los Angeles Galaxy 3-3-1

Got a late equalizer against Dallas from an unlikely source: veteran and ex-Sounder Pat Noonan.

10. (11) FC Dallas 3-3-3

Brek Shea has his team’s past three goals, two on PKs. Is he ready to regain his All-Star form?

11. (12) Colorado Rapids 4-4-0

Conor Casey made his long-awaited return from an Achilles injury last week against Chivas.

12. (10) Chicago Fire 2-2-2

Came out of Saturday’s home game with no points and two suspensions. Not a good weekend.

13. (13) Chivas USA 3-5-0

Haven’t won at home since September, and past four home defeats have all been by a 1-0 score.

14. (14) Columbus Crew 2-4-1

Heads to Portland on a sorry 2-12-4 run against Western Conf. teams on the road since 2010.

15. (18) Montreal Impact 2-5-2

Will momentum from a big win over Portland give them a chance against K.C.? Not likely.

16. (15) Portland Timbers FC 2-5-1

A 2-0 loss to an expansion team will do little to settle the anxiety of a disappointing start.

17. (16) Philadelphia Union 2-4-1

Off to Seattle this week with a misfiring offense and a coach and player serving suspensions.

18. (17) New England Revolution 2-5-0

Have lost three games in a row and 10 of the past 12 dating to the end of the 2011 season.

19. (19) Toronto FC 0-7-0

Have matched the 1999 Kansas City Wizards for the worst start in MLS history.

Any thoughts? Who’s too high or too low?
