Video: Papiss Cisse’s power strike

* * *

If you haven’t seen Fredy Montero‘s remarkable goal from last night, I recommend doing so now (start at about the 4:57 mark).

If you have, I recommend doing so again.

But, amazingly, it probably wasn’t the best goal in the world of soccer on Wednesday. Over in the English Premier League, Newcastle forward Papiss Cisse scored what might’ve been the goal of the year against Chelsea — and I’ve posted that highlight above.

It was a great day to enjoy some beautiful goals. Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— Elsewhere in MLS action Wednesday, San Jose beat D.C. United, 5-3, to remain in first place in the Western Conference. Chris Wondolowski, the reigning MLS Player of the Month, is up to 10 goals on the season now. New England beat Colorado, 2-1, to give goalkeeper Matt Reis his 100th career victory.

— The team website had a cool story on the 20th anniversary of Kasey Keller‘s first game for Millwall, which paved the way for American soccer players to play overseas.

Here’s some coverage of Senator Patty Murray and the Sounders Women celebrating 40 years of Title IX. You’ll notice Megan Rapinoe has joined the team.

— The Kitsap Sun takes a look at the upcoming Pumas season.

— The U.S. men’s national team will play its Sept. 11 World Cup qualifier at Crew Stadium. They’ll face Jamaica in that one.

— USMNT forward Jozy Altidore was suffered head and back injuries yesterday when a collision sent him crashing into the sideline. Here’s video of the incident.

— Over in Spain, Leo Messi‘s broke the European record for goals in a single season. He has 68 now, besting the record of 67 by Bayern Munich’s Gerd Mueller in 1972-73. Real Madrid clinched the league title.

— Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba was at his team’s game Wednesday, an emotional return for him after collapsing with a heart attack earlier this season and fighting for his life. He talked about it here.

Fiorentina fired its coach after he went after his own player following a substitution. The video is just amazing.

— Lastly, former NASL Sounder Harry Redknapp will be going to Euro ’12 after all, but not as England’s manager. He’ll be there working for BBC.
