I’ll admit, I missed this tackle live. But after watching the tape last night, I felt punishment could be coming Leo Gonzalez‘ way and mentioned as much in my player ratings.
And so it has.
The Sounders FC defender has been suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount by the MLS Disciplinary Committee “for endangering the safety of his opponent.” The play happened in the 88th minute of Seattle’s 1-0 win against Philadelphia, when Gonzalez stomped on Union defender Sheanon Williams with his right foot.
Gonzalez will serve his suspension Wednesday against FC Dallas.
Elsewhere in the land of retroactive discipline, New England Revolution forward Fernando Cardenas had his suspension and fine rescinded after an independent review panel judged he was incorrectly issued a red card against Real Salt Lake. Here’s that play.
