Sounders FC U-23s kick off (Friday links)

u23s logo.jpgThe Sounders FC U-23s begin their PDL season tonight on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps U-23. The team’s next game in Saturday at the Victoria Highlanders, the second of three-straight away matches to kick things off.

The U-23s’ first home game is May 25th at 7:30 p.m. against Victoria at Franklin Pierce High School. That’s followed by a 6 p.m. game on May 30 against Vancouver, which will be played at Cheney Stadium.

The team website has a good preview of a loaded Northwest Division, so I recommend checking that out. Here’s the blurb on the Sounders U-23s:

The Sounders FC U-23 are prepped and ready for their inaugural season. The Sounders U23 have been able to add a number of former Sounders Academy players to their roster, including Akron’s DeAndre Yedlin, who was a College Soccer News Freshman All-American this past fall. The club will be full of top class collegiate talent from around the country including Fernando Monge from UCLA and Anthony Arena from Wake Forrest. The team will also be paced by local college talent from the University of Washington, including Taylor Peay and Chris Brundage, who are expected to bolster the side’s defense.

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

Fredy Montero has been pretty good as a late-game sub on the road.

— RSL reminds us that there’s a little juice in the rivalry with Seattle.

— Here’s the first part of an interview Soccer America had with former NASL Sounders player/coach Bobby Howe.

— Sounds like star Italian defender Alessandro Nesta is thinking about joining MLS. New York, it appears, is the likely destination if that happens.

Emmanuel Adebayor has also been linked to the Red Bulls. Why is New York always attracting aging European stars? Here’s a closer look.

— The Columbus Crew will host Stoke City in a July 24 friendly. Here’s a story on the MLS team’s struggle to have a bigger impact. Stoke will also visit Kansas City on Aug. 1. Swansea City will play friendlies at Colorado (July 24) and San Jose (July 31).

— The LA Galaxy will make their trip to the White House on Tuesday to be honored as the reigning MLS champion. The picture in the linked story shows Tyrone Marshall front and center during the Rapids’ ceremony (even though he was a Sounder during Colorado’s title run). I wonder if Pat Noonan will sneak into the middle of the upcoming shot.

— Here’s more praise for Fulham star Clint Dempsey (who will miss Sunday’s EPL finale injured) and here’s an update on a fellow American abroad, Bolton newcomer Tim Ream. And is Inter Milan after Michael Bradley?

— There’s a new semipro indoor soccer team trying to get going in Seattle. Interested in getting involved? Here are some details.

— Lastly, FOXSports.com has more from Hope Solo.
