Steve Zakuani’s availability deemed “50-50” for MLS Reserve League game Friday

Here’s coach Sigi Schmid on the midfielder’s availability:

“We’re going to see how he feels today and that’ll be the decision,” Schmid said. “Right now, we’re not sure. It’s probably 50-50. … Yesterday we really backed off on him because he was really sore. We just want to make sure it’s the right situation and if it isn’t the right situation, we’ll hold off. We’re not stuck to a timetable.”

The Sounders will have a few other personnel issues to consider for the 6 p.m. game at Starfire, as well. Andrew Duran is seemingly the only available defender, so Schmid said Roger Levesque or Mike Seamon might have to fill in. Some academy players will also be called upon.

“I told Ezra, ‘Good luck,’ ” joked Schmid.

Leo Gonzalez isn’t ready to play as he recovers from the quad injury, but one player you might’ve expected to be available is Michael Tetteh. The team’s top draft pick in 2011 has been battling hamstring injuries for several months, but has trained seemingly in full for quite a while.

“Tetteh’s able to play,” Schmid said, “but we’re still trying to be cautious because the last two times we thought he was able to play, he ended up pulling his hamstring again right at the end of 45 minutes. So we’re trying to limit his time. Everything he’s done, you’d think, ‘OK, he can go and start and play somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes,’ but we’re trying to be very cautious. Some guys have a very good feel for their body. Others don’t. He’s doesn’t seem to know when he’s getting close to that edge and sometimes pushes over it and gets injured again. Then we start at ground zero again.”
