Patience — not surgery — required in Michael Gspurning’s recovery from hip injury

gspurning mug 2012.jpgSounders FC goalkeeper Michael Gspurning was back with the team Wednesday after having sought out a second opinion earlier in the week regarding a hip strain that has forced him to miss six MLS games.

“What ended up happening with him,” coach Sigi Schmid explained, “is he pushed too hard the one day and suffered little bit of a setback. But there’s nothing serious in there. There’s no surgery or anything like that that’s needed.”

Getting the next four days off, Schmid said, will help in that recovery process.

A June 16 road game in Montreal had previously been a target date for Gspurning’s return, but that might be a stretch. The team will try to err on the side of caution.

“We really have to see,” said Schmid. “It’s sort of day by day. The specialist that he went to see really said, ‘You’ve just got to listen to your body and go day by day and not push too quickly.’ It might still take a little bit of time, but we know that if can be patient, then the long-term benefit is it should be behind him and we can move forward.”
