Poll: Should San Jose agree to change the date of its Open Cup home game?

Two games in three days? That’s too much, according to Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid.

And that’s what Seattle is scheduled for later this month with an MLS game at Portland on June 24 followed by a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal at San Jose on June 26. It’s part of a stretch where the Sounders will play seven games in 22 days.

Asked if the team is trying to get the date of the Open Cup game changed — perhaps pushed back a day — Schmid said, “it’s something that I’m sure we’re talking to them about. I don’t know if it’s going to happen or not happen. I’m not quite sure what the U.S. Soccer Open Cup rules are.”

But would Schmid prefer to split the week with the game Wednesday?

“I think in a general rule, no team should have to play two games in three days,” he said. “But that’s just for anybody. And so if we were on the other end of the stick, I hope that our front office would say, ‘Hey, we’ll accommodate that,’ as well. But for the athletes and the assets, which are the players, it puts a tremendous strain on them.”

San Jose might not be entirely empathetic in those requests having played its third-round Open Cup game against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers just two days after an MLS game against Kansas City. Not to mention, that would be willingly giving away a competitive advantage on an extra day’s rest (the Earthquakes play June 23 at Real Salt Lake), which is hard to expect anyone to do.

Another issue that was bound to come up was the idea of purchasing hosting rights, which Seattle did in the third round with Atlanta, but Schmid shrugged that off quickly.

“I don’t think we’re talking to them about hosting rights,” he said. “I think we’re going to San Jose.”

Ultimately, what do you think? Should the Earthquakes do the nice thing and agree to move the game or should they look out for themselves and decline?
