My Euro 2012 predictions

200px-UEFA_Euro_2012_logo.jpgThe FIFA World Cup is obviously the biggest international tournament, but it’s hard to argue against the UEFA European championship being the most competitive. The 16-team field includes 13 of the top 18 countries in the world, according to FIFA’s rankings.

Action kicks off Friday morning and be sure to sign up for our European Soccer Challenge, where you can compare your game-by-game picks to mine and win prizes from Sounders FC.

Here are my predictions:

* * *

Group stage (top two advance)

Group A — 1) Russia, 2) Poland, 3) Greece, 4) Czech Republic

Group B — 1) Netherlands, 2) Germany, 3) Portugal, 4) Denmark

Group C — 1) Spain, 2) Croatia, 3) Italy, 4) Republic of Ireland

Group D — 1) France, 2) England, 3) Ukraine, 4) Sweden

Knockout rounds

Quarterfinals — Germany over Russia, Spain over England, Netherlands over Poland, France over Croatia

Semifinals — Germany over Spain, Netherlands over France

Final — Netherlands over Germany
