The break begins (Thursday links)

Sounders FC’s four-day break from training begins today, meaning there will be less to update on the blog through the weekend. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some links.

* * *

— Big news out of Toronto FC: Aron Winter agreed to step down as coach and Director of Player Development Paul Mariner will take over. Winter finished with a 7-22-15 record. Mariner becomes the team’s seventh coach in its young history.

— Also, Houston signed a designated player in Honduran midfielder Oscar Boniek Garcia, and Portland and Philadelphia agreed to a trade that sent Danny Mwanga to the Timbers and Jorge Perlaza to the Union.

— Elsewhere around MLS, Vancouver forward Omar Salgado broke his foot recently, here’s a story by our good friend on Portland forward Kris Boyd, and Philly.com takes a look at the Union playing an affiliate in an Open Cup quarterfinal.

— ESPN announced some of its broadcast pairings for Euro ’12 and Kasey Keller will be on the ESPN call for the following games: Russia-Czech Republic (Friday), Germany-Portugal (Saturday), Ukraine-Sweden (Monday), Poland-Russia (Tuesday). All four will be 11:45 a.m. kickoffs.

— In case you missed it, here’s our obituary on NASL Sounder Steve Buttle (1953-2012). GoalWA.net has some old pictures and stories on the fan favorite.

Here’s a preview of the Sounders FC U-23s’ weekend.

— Here’s the latest podcast with Arlo White and KJR’s Mike Gastineau.

— Around the world of soccer, Clint Dempsey (no surprise) was named Fulham’s top player last season, here’s a look at racism concerns for Euro ’12 (refs will be given control to stop games if it becomes an issue), and sad news out of Villareal, where the team’s newly hired coach died of a heart attack.

— Here’s a look at Chelsea’s new away jerseys. Unfortunately it sounds like they won’t be unveiled July 18 in Seattle, but a week later against the MLS All-Stars:
