Exciting start to Euro ’12 (Saturday links)

I’ll get into these quickly as I have to head out to my younger brother’s college graduation this morning:

* * *

— What a start to Euro 2012! Here’s a roundup of the first day’s action, where a referee tried to spoil the excitement in the opener between Poland and Greece, and Russia flexed its muscles against the Czech Republic. Big games continue today in Group B with Germany-Portugal and Netherlands-Denmark.

— Unfortunately, it seems like pre-tournament racism concerns weren’t overblown. After an incident at a Dutch training session recently, it sounds like Czech Republic’s Gebre Selassie was the target of some racist behavior in Friday’s game.

— Locally, the Sounders Women’s perfect start to the W-League season ended (but it remains an unbeaten start) with a scoreless tie against Vancouver. The Sounders FC U-23s beat Washington Crossfire, 2-0. A couple locals earned honorable mention on the PDL Team of the Week.

— Elsewhere, Vancouver forward Long Tan caused himself some problems by mouthing off on Twitter, El Salvador is apparently charging journalists $50 for credentials for a World Cup qualifier against Mexico (some big organizations are refusing to pay), and defender Bobby Burling is trying to get back into the league after some travels abroad.

— Even though it’s in training, it’s hard not to appreciate this skill from Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder (at the 0:48 mark). Meaningless as it is, I feel better about picking Holland to win the whole thing:
