Euro ’12 round two begins (Tuesday links)

200px-UEFA_Euro_2012_logo.jpgAll 16 teams at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine have played their first group-stage game. Surprisingly, I actually did pretty well in my game-by-game predictions in our European Soccer Challenge contest that you should check out if you haven’t already.

Here are how things stood in the tournament before Tuesday’s games:

Group A — Russia 1-0, Greece 0-0-1, Poland 0-0-1, Czech Republic 0-1

Group B — Germany 1-0, Denmark 1-0, Netherlands 0-1, Portugal 0-1

Group C — Croatia 1-0, Spain 0-0-1, Italy 0-0-1, Ireland 0-1

Group D — Ukraine 1-0, France 0-0-1, England 0-0-1, Sweden 0-1

Any surprises for you? Good or bad? Team or individual?

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— Big game tonight in World Cup qualifying as the U.S. men’s national team heads to Guatemala for a 7 p.m. game. Unfortunately, you’ll have to pay to watch this one on TV or online. More information is available here. Fado Irish Pub downtown might be the only bar that purchased the game and it sounds like there will be a cover charge. (UPDATE 10:14 a.m. — Golazo will also be carrying the game, free of charge Golazo announced around 2:30 p.m. it will not have the game on).

— In other USMNT news: here’s a story on forward Terrence Boyd‘s undivided loyalty (also, he going to play for Austria’s Rapid Vienna), here’s a feature on Herculez Gomez‘s travels, and it sounds like Jozy Altidore isn’t ready to start.

— Also, here’s a look at what the U.S. faces on the road in qualifying (which, on this trip to Guatemala, may or may not include a crazy commercial with Marco Pappa and some international stars).

Here’s a story from Norwich on the passing of NASL Sounder Steve Buttle.

— In other notes with a local flavor, the Sounders are hosting a book drive, defender Adam Johansson visited the Swedish Cultural Center and answered some questions, the Sounders FC U-23s moved into first place in the PDL’s Northwest Division with a 3-0 win over North Sound SeaWolves FC, and the ever-growing Korrio has partnered with D.C. United.

— The Andriy Shevchenko-to-MLS rumors are back on after this New York Times story. I wonder if the price will go up after Euros (the veteran forward already has two goals for Ukraine).

— Around the league, here’s an issue story on youth development in this country from The Washington Post, the league website has an update on Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders, his former teammate Donovan Ricketts is dealing with an injury that could keep him out of this weekend’s game against Seattle, and D.C. United president Kevin Payne does a Q&A.

— Lastly, Sounder at Heart found the video of this ad featuring Mauro Rosales
