Sounders FC’s worst five-game stretches

Seattle Sounders FC Logo.jpgFor the purposes of this post, I’m only counting five-game stretches within a particular season (e.g. the Sounders lost three straight to end 2010, including the playoffs, and lost the first two games of the following year).

And with those parameters set, here’s the payoff:

By my research, Sounders FC’s current 0-3-2 slump is the worst five-game stretch in an MLS season in team history.

The previous worsts were a pair of back-to-back 1-4-0 runs in the first half of the 2010 season.

Of course stats can tell us whatever we want. We can also say Seattle is on a franchise-best start to the season through 14 games, which is true: 7-4-3 in 2012, 5-4-5 in 2011, 4-7-3 in 2010, 5-3-6 in 2009.

Without further ado, here’s a list of Sounders FC’s worst five-game stretches within an MLS season:

3 points — May 22 to June 27, 2010 (1-4-0)

3 points — May 29 to July 4, 2010 (1-4-0)

4 points — May 10 to June 6, 2009 (0-1-4)

4 points — July 25 to August 20, 2009 (1-3-1)

4 points — August 2 to August 23, 2009 (1-3-1)

4 points — April 25 to May 22, 2010 (1-3-1)

4 points — May 1 to May 29, 2010 (1-3-1)

4 points — June 5 to July 11, 2010 (1-3-1)

4 points — June 10 to July 14, 2010 (1-3-1)

5 points — Nine times (3x in 2009, 3x in 2010, 2x in 2011, once in 2012)
