Christian Sivebaek on his way out

* * *

Rumors of Christian Sivebaek‘s departure from Sounders FC first came Tuesday afternoon, when an MLSsoccer.com editor tweeted (since deleted) that the Danish midfielder had been waived.

The team had no comment, but I had noticed that Sivebaek wasn’t around at the end of practice when reporters were allowed in. Nothing substantial came from my inquiries of his absence.

Speculation eventually turned to resolution Tuesday evening when Sivebaek posted a series of tweets (embedded above). A formal announcement of his departure would appear to be the natural next step.

The 24-year-old played just 88 minutes in three MLS games this season, none since March. He saw some brief time in the CONCACAF Champions League and the reserve league, as well.

Sivebaek boasted an impressive combination of size, speed and build, but it never quite came together in Seattle. Many had high hopes for him, the son on Danish international and Manchester United defender John Sivebaek, but the emergence of some other young midfielders (e.g. Alex Caskey, Andy Rose, Cordell Cato) likely worked against him, too.

He did take up an international roster slot, which could prove useful to the Sounders in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Any thoughts on a move that didn’t work out?
