In another milestone along a remarkable recovery, Steve Zakuani will suit up for tonight’s game against Sporting Kansas City.
He’ll start out on the bench, meaning his MLS return will be up to coach Sigi Schmid.
It’s been nearly 14 months since Zakuani suffered a devastating broken leg in Colorado on a reckless slide tackle from Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan. Months of grueling rehab have led to significant progress, especially in the last several weeks.
Earlier this month, Zakuani played an impressive 45 minutes in an MLS Reserve League game against Vancouver
Schmid had this Zakuani update Monday, when he left the door open to the 24-year-old’s availability.
“Zakuani has definitely improved his training and so forth,” the coach said. “He’s taken another step forward. For sure he’s not (90 minutes fit) or anything like that, but he’s stepped forward.”
One step closer to a full return.
