Sounders waive midfielder Christian Sivebaek, sign defender Daniel Steres

Seattle Sounders FC Logo.jpgSounders FC announced a pair of expected moves Friday in the release of midfielder Christian Sivebaek and the signing of defender Daniel Steres.

Sivebaek’s departure was first reported Wednesday, then not reported, then confirmed by the player on Twitter. The 24-year-old Dane played just 88 MLS minutes in three games (one start) — but hadn’t seen the field since March.

Sivebaek tweeted that he’s off to Denmark. The Sounders said the split was by “mutual agreement” in a news release.

Steres was acquired by Seattle in the waiver draft on June 6 after training with the Sounders earlier in the season. The move to send rookie defender Andrew Duran to Atlanta on loan for an undetermined amount of time appeared to open the door for Steres’ addition.

A 21-year-old drafted by Chivas USA in this year’s MLS Supplemental Draft, Steres told me last week that the Sounders view him mostly as a center back. He also can play as an outside back or as a holding midfielder, where he played with the VC Fusion of the PDL in recent months.

Terms of Steres’ deal were not disclosed, per team and league policy, but I expect he’s an off-budget, developmental player on the roster.
