Euro 2012 action returns (Wednesday links)

200px-UEFA_Euro_2012_logo.jpgIt’s been too long, but after a two-day break Euro 2012 action returns with a 11:45 quarterfinal today between Spain and Portugal.

Grant Wahl has this preview of the round for SI.com and it sounds like TV ratings are way up for the tournament, which is awesome to hear.

What ultimately might stand out most from this event is how it spurred the implementation of goal-line technology, which is getting closer and closer.

Let’s get to some links:

* * *

— It’s an all-MLS affair in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals. Joining the Sounders in the final four are Chivas USA and, on the other side of the bracket, Philadelphia and Sporting Kansas City. Here’s a roundup of quarterfinal action.

— The MLS transfer window opens today and stays open through July 27. Seattle’s interest in German midfielder Christian Tiffert has been covered; other deals have already been locked up: Italian forward Marco di Vaio (Montreal), Brazilian midfielder Alex Monteiro De Lima (Chicago), Scottish midfielder Barry Robson (Vancouver), Costa Rican forward Jairo Arrieta (Columbus), Honduran midfielder Oscar Boniek Garcia (Houston), Malian defender Bakary Soumare (Philadelphia).

— Elsewhere around the league, FC Dallas signed a big jersey deal with AdvoCare, Chicago sent defender Kwame Watson-Siriboe to Real Salt Lake for a draft pick, Shoreline’s George John is slowly getting back into action for Dallas, and here’s a broad look at attendance leaguewide.

— Also, apparently progress being made on a soccer stadium in New York for a hopeful expansion team, D.C. United will play PSG of France instead of Juventus in a friendly, and Columbus defender Chad Marshall is still working back from a concussion.

Hope Solo and KJR’s Mike Gastineau had an interesting exchange on Twitter this morning.

— The guys at the league website broke down David Horst‘s goal against the Sounders on Sunday (it seems like they do this feature for a lot of goals on Seattle, though to be fair, there have been a lot to choose from recently).

— Also from MLSsoccer.com, Matt Doyle looks at how Osvaldo Alonso would fit in the U.S. men’s national team in the chance he becomes eligible…
