All about goalkeepers: Weber out 2-4 weeks, Meredith to start, Ford activated off DL

gks 2012.jpgI’m not sure if other MLS teams have four goalkeepers under contract, but Sounders FC has needed all of them this season.

Injuries have hammered the position and the news got worse Tuesday.

Andrew Weber (top right) will be out about two to four weeks after a suffering a groin strain Saturday in New England. Coach Sigi Schmid did, however, refer to him as a fast healer.

On top of that, starter Michael Gspurning (top left) is still on the road to recovery from the hip injury that’s forced him to miss 10 games. A timeline on his return could be known by the end of this week.

By default almost, that leaves Bryan Meredith (bottom left) as the starter.

Backing him up will be Josh Ford (bottom right), who was activated off the disabled list Tuesday. Ford, who was Seattle’s No. 3 for most of last season, had been recovering from a stress fracture in his knee for several months. He had gone on the disabled list on May 4.

“He’s the healthy one,” Schmid said of Ford, “so he’s got to go onto the bench. But he’s been full in training now for the last three weeks about and he’s look good. (Goalkeeper coach Tom Dutra) has been happy with him. The only thing he obviously doesn’t have is games at this point, but his training has been very, very sharp.”

So Ford is ready to go as a backup, but what about Meredith as a starter?

The 22-year-old started seven games after coming in as a halftime sub for Gspurning on May 2 against the Galaxy. He was then benched in favor of Weber two weeks ago.

“It’s a big moment for him right now,” Schmid said of Meredith. “It’s a moment where he had the opportunity to start and he did very well, and then the performances maybe weren’t as strong, and now through an injury he has another opportunity. Now it’s a matter of how much has he learned from his first experience, his first go-around? And is his attitude going to be, ‘I’m going to hold onto this thing. I’m not going to let it go again.’?”
