My MLS power rankings — Week 17

San Jose Earthquakes Logo.jpg[Ed note: These rankings were filed before Tuesday’s games and win/loss records will reflect that. San Jose lost on the road in Portland, 2-1; Chicago went to Houston and played to a scoreless tie.]

* * *

1. (1) San Jose Earthquakes 11-3-3

Might Chris Wondolowski make a run at the MLS record of 27 goals?

2. (3) D.C. United 10-5-3

Chris Pontius’ stellar goal helped lead the team to a fifth win in six games.

3. (2) New York Red Bulls 9-4-4

Kenny Cooper hasn’t scored since May; Thierry Henry hasn’t since April.

4. (6) Chicago Fire 8-5-3

GK Sean Johnson, 23, came up huge in a three-game winning streak with 16 saves.

5. (4) Real Salt Lake 10-6-2

Three-game losing streak is the team’s first since July 2007. Hosts slumping Seattle next.

6. (5) Sporting Kansas City 9-5-2

Once the runaway leader in the East, continues to drop points with back-to-back losses.

7. (8) Columbus Crew 6-5-4

Tony Tchani (two goals) and Chris Birchall (two assists) have led the way in the past two games.

8. (7) Vancouver Whitecaps FC 7-4-5

New DP midfielder Barry Robson became eligible last week and could soon make his debut.

9. (10) Houston Dynamo 6-5-5

Went 4-0-2 in its first six at home after opening the new BBVA Compass Stadium in May.

10. (9) Seattle Sounders FC 7-5-5

Defenders are finally getting healthy, but goalkeepers are the latest to struggle with injuries.

11. (13) Colorado Rapids 7-8-1

Will get familiar with the Sounders this month with a road game Saturday, home game July 28.

12. (11) Los Angeles Galaxy 6-9-2

Landon Donovan is expected to become the first 12-time MLS All-Star this season.

13. (14) Chivas USA 5-7-4

Juan Pablo Angel has three goals, the lowest in the league for a team leader.

14. (12) Montreal Impact 5-10-3

Legendary Italian defender Alessandro Nesta, 36, is a big-name target for the expansion side.

15. (15) New England Revolution 5-7-4

Got a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer for the second straight game Saturday vs. Seattle.

16. (16) Portland Timbers FC 4-7-4

One of two teams (Dallas) without a road win this season; 2-14-8 on the road in two years.

17. (19) Toronto FC 2-10-3

Unbeaten in four since a coaching change, but it’s probably much too late for a playoff push.

18. (17) Philadelphia Union 3-9-2

Recently cut ties with scouting director Diego Gutierrez, youth director Alecko Eskandarian.

19. (18) FC Dallas 3-9-5

This week GK Kevin Hartman is set to become the first in MLS history to play 400 games.

Normally I’d ask what you think, and feel free to comment, but the games Tuesday night obviously throw these off a little.
