The moment felt around the league: Steve Zakuani and Brian Mullan exchange jerseys, share a hug

* * *

If Steve Zakuani‘s return to MLS action Saturday night was emotional, the postgame scene might have been ever more so.

After the final whistle, Zakuani shared some embraces with players on the field. One of them was with Colorado midfielder Brian Mullan, who broke Zakuani’s leg last April with a reckless slide tackle, and the two went on to exchange jerseys. It was the iconic moment of a memorable evening and a public show that everything has long been resolved between them.

Zakuani talked about that exchange and more after the game.

Mullan also addressed Zakuani’s return in this story on ColoradoRapids.com.

“It was a great moment for him,” Mullan told the team website. “I didn’t want to take anything away from it. I just told him welcome back.”

Here’s a sample of some player reaction around the league:

And one last one from Steve’s brother…
